THE NEXT CHAPTER FOUNDATION
ABOUT US
The Next Chapter Foundation was born from my journey as a single mother who once tried to help another single mom, Alyssa, when her world fell apart after her daughter was suddenly diagnosed with leukemia. I watched her pain, her fear, and her exhaustion as she tried to stay strong for her children while her life was turned upside down. I wanted to help, but I did not know where to start. My resources were limited, and so were the systems meant to support her.
Two years later, I found myself helping another single mom facing a similar crisis when her child was diagnosed with brain tumors. Some of her struggles were the same, while others were completely different. I reached back to Alyssa for guidance and realized that someone who had already walked that path could offer comfort and understanding in a way that I could not.
That moment changed everything. I realized that if two parents had needs that went far beyond what any social service or hospital could provide, there must be many more families feeling the same way, lost, unsupported, and unsure where to turn.
Together, Alyssa and I decided to turn our shared experiences into something greater. We joined forces to create The Next Chapter Foundation, a place where families facing crisis can find compassion, clarity, and real support from people who truly understand what they are going through.
Our Mission
Our mission is to transform pain into purpose.
At The Next Chapter, we believe that everything you go through has meaning, that your story, no matter how hard or painful, can become someone else’s survival guide.
When you help another parent through what you’ve already endured, your pain finds purpose, and your story keeps turning its pages, not as an ending, but as a new beginning for someone else.
Because healing isn’t the end of your chapter, it’s the start of someone else’s next chapter.
Our Vision
A world where every parent facing crisis is met with compassion, clarity, and community, and where those who have overcome hardship become a source of hope and guidance for others.
We envision a community built on shared experiences, where families heal together and pay it forward by using their stories to lift others who are just beginning their journey.
Through connection, compassion, and purpose, we create a cycle of healing that continues to grow with every act of kindness and every story shared.
Our Purpose
When a parent faces a crisis such as a diagnosis, an accident, or any life-changing event, their world stops.
The Next Chapter steps in to bridge the gap, meeting each family exactly where they are.
Traditional systems can’t meet every need. That is where we come in.
We listen. We identify what is missing. And we take action through real, personalized support, such as:
Sponsoring certifications to help parents regain independence
Assisting with résumé rebuilding or job searches
Coordinating transportation and meal support
Arranging home sanitation or essential repairs
In South Florida, thousands of families live one step away from crisis. More than half of all households in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach cannot afford basic needs, and nearly forty percent of families with children are led by single parents. When childhood cancer enters the picture, everything collapses at once.
Each year, about 191 children in our region are diagnosed with cancer. At least 65 to 75 of those cases involve single-parent families, and because treatment often lasts two to five years, between 150 and 200 single parents are actively navigating their child’s cancer journey at any given moment. These parents face job loss, financial instability, emotional exhaustion, and the crushing pressure of being both caregiver and provider.
The Next Chapter Foundation exists to stand in this gap. We help single parents from the moment of diagnosis with advocacy, emotional support, resume rebuilding, remote-work pathways, and financial assistance so they can stay by their child’s side without losing their stability.
No parent should face their child’s cancer diagnosis alone. We are here to support the next chapter of their lives.
Families facing pediatric cancer receive support from several respected organizations, yet none address the most destabilizing reality for single parents: the loss of income, employment, and day-to-day stability during their child’s treatment. Programs such as Imerman Angels, Gilda’s Club, Triage Cancer, Cancer and Careers, and Dress for Success each address one piece of the journey: emotional support, group programs, legal information, workplace rights, or professional attire. Hospital social workers assist with medical logistics, but their role ends at the hospital door.
What is missing is a coordinated, hands-on approach that supports the parent’s emotional, practical, and economic survival throughout treatment. Single parents cannot leave their child’s bedside. They cannot maintain traditional employment. They are forced to choose between income and their child’s life.
The Next Chapter Foundation fills this critical gap. We provide diagnosis-day advocacy, weekly case management, resource navigation, resume rebuilding, job readiness coaching, remote-work placement, and ongoing stabilization. We turn information into action. We restore hope where systems fall short. We are the only organization in South Florida focused exclusively on the immediate survival and long-term stability of single parents of children with cancer.
